Prize honors engagement with contemporary history and politics

The Carl-von-Ossietzky-Prize for Contemporary History and Politics is awarded biennially by the city of Oldenburg to honor certain works, complete works or individuals who have dealt with the life and work of Carl von Ossietzky or the resistance against National Socialism in an extraordinary way. The prize is also awarded to works or individuals who, in the spirit of Ossietzky, engage themselves with the democratic tradition and present of Germany as well as political subjects and contemporary history. The honoree is also awarded with 10.000 Euros. An independent jury decides upon the recipient. Unsolicited applications are not accepted.

The Carl-von-Ossietzky-Prize for Contemporary History and Politics is awarded every two years on or around the anniversary of Carl von Ossietzky’s death, the 4th of May. The latest recipient of the award 2022 was the pianist and activist Igor Levit.
